Jaarverslag 2003

The workgroup was founded in December 2001 and currently counts 121 members and an additional 50 people participated in one or more of the workgroup's activities. Our goals are to strengthen multidisciplinary scientific discussion in the field of international health and to facilitate fieldwork through mutual support. Uniting Streams is a workgroup of the Dutch Society of Tropical Medicine, but activities are open to everyone interested in field research in international health.
This year, the workgroup organised several activities, while setting up the facilities needed to provide scientific and organisational support for field work.

• Symposium on field research in international health, May 15th 2003, AMC Amsterdam
  This symposium, "High Tech & Poor Health" was the second organised by Uniting Streams and NVTG, this time in collaboration with Sharenet. The program was extended as compared to the first symposium and the number of participants increased to 120. We are currently in discussion with fellow organisations in international health to organise a joint third symposium May 2004.
• Working group on tour
  Bimonthly scientific/ supportive meetings. These meetings are organised by members of the workgroup at their home institutes. The hosting institute is responsible for both the scientific contents and the organisation of the evening: January 2003, UMC Nijmegen, Dept of Medical Microbiology and March 2003, KIT Amsterdam.
  The workgroup on tour-meetings were each visited by 15-30 people from many different research groups and universities.
• Platform International Health.
  Uniting Streams participates in a joint attempt of researchers in international health to get health research on the agenda of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS) in order to develop a clear policy. A first discussion at the Ministry was constructive, although policy changes are not to be expected soon. The platform will continue its discussion with DGIS and will continue its search for consensus with fellow researchers for the organisation of a structure for research in international health.

Goals: to strengthen multidisciplinary scientific discussion in the field of international health and to facilitate fieldwork through mutual support.

Activities: This year, the workgroup organised several activities, while setting up the facilities needed to provide scientific and organisational support for field work.

- Symposium on field research in international health, May 23^rd 2002, Amsterdam:
The morning session "Field Research in the Tropics: challenge or ...?" addressed several issues concerning the organisation of field research and the afternoon session focused on scientific presentations of research in international health, allowing scientists to share and discuss their research results with colleagues. The symposium was visited by 80 participants and evaluated positively.

- Working group on tour:
Bimonthly scientific/supportive meetings. These meetings are organised by members of the workgroup at their home institutes. The hosting institute is responsible for both the scientific contents and the organisation of the evening.
- March 4^th 2002 Leiden Dept of Parasitology Lab facilities
- Sept 2^nd 2002 Rotterdam Dept of Public Health Using 2^nd hand field data
- Nov 11^th 2002 Wageningen Dept of Entomology Insects & Food in International Health
The workgroup on tour-meetings were each visited by 15-30 people from many different research groups and universities. The broad range of subjects and possibilities to visit several research groups and meet fellow researchers from various institutes has been evaluated positively.

- Web site www.unitingstreams.com
The web site was presented on the 23rd of May during the symposium. Currently, online registration is possible and the agenda, workgroup on tour and discussion site are active and will soon be available to all members. One e-mail address for information is created: info@unitingstreams.com.

Future plans:
- Symposium on field research in international health May 15^th 2003
- Workgroup on tour will be continued, next meeting Jan 27^th in Nijmegen: research ethics, combined with the yearly general membership meeting.
- Further development of the web site, especially the discussion site. Members will soon be able to register through the internet and access the site for scientific backup by fellow researchers. Additionally, a web-based overview of interesting courses and meetings will be provided.
- Investigate the possibilities to offer a library service with full text access from the field.

Verslag van de oprichtingsvergadering van de werkgroep Field Research in International Health, 17 december 2001

Het voorlopig bestuur wordt gevormd door Mike van der Kolk, voorzitter m.vanderkolk@mmb.azn.nl en Petra Schneider, secretaris p.schneider@mmb.azn.nl
De ledenlijst wordt nog samengesteld, wie interesse heeft melde zich aan bij Petra Schneider.
Er wordt nog gezocht naar een toepasselijke naam, graag suggesties insturen naar Petra Schneider. De beste inzending wordt bekroond met een goede fles wijn.

Doelstelling van de werkgroep: het versterken van de multidisciplinaire wetenschappelijke discussie tussen onderzoekers in International Health in  Nederland en daarbuiten. De werkgroep zal de rol van een soort interfaculteit aannemen en open staan voor onderzoekers en geïnteresseerden in het veld van International Health. De werkgroep zal functioneren als werkgroep van de NVTG maar ook nauw contact onderhouden met de leden  van andere verenigingen zoals de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Parasitologie, de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Epidemiologie e.a.
De werkgroep zal ongeveer één keer per twee maanden bijeen komen op wisselende locaties. Per bijeenkomst zal een bepaald thema centraal staan waar dieper op zal worden ingegaan. Het is aan het gastinstituut om dit thema met betrekking tot het uitvoeren van onderzoek in International Health te bepalen en eventuele sprekers te organiseren. De eerst bijeenkomst zal worden gehouden in Leiden op maandag 4 maart 2002 van 17:30 tot 19:30 met als thema "opzetten van labfaciliteiten in het veld". Een meer gedetailleerde mailing zal worden rondgestuurd aan een ieder die geïnteresseerd is. Contactpersoon voor deze eerste bijeenkomst is Lisette van Lieshout: E.A.van_Lieshout@lumc.nl

Verder staan de volgende activiteiten op de agenda:
-Het organiseren van een wetenschappelijke vergadering 23 mei a.s., zie de aankondiging elders in dit blad.
-het opbouwen van een website
-een bijdrage leveren aan het nog meer beschikbaar maken van wetenschappelijke literatuur ten behoeve van onderzoekers  in ontwikkelingslanden.

Geïnteresseerden worden van harte uitgenodigd deel te nemen aan deze nieuwe werkgroep.
